Nowhere Band News

news about Nowhere Band and about nowhere bands in general

Wallace

So, David Foster Wallace. Wow, that was tough; I’ve rearranged a whole lot of my mental furniture in response to stuff he wrote. His story “Good Old Neon” fundamentally changed the way I think about depression.  Disturbingly, “Good Old Neon” is all about the suicide urge and how depression is really a weird sort of intense internal war, devastating to the person it’s internal to and generally kind of opaque and impenetrable to people on the outside. It’s a little disconcerting when the man whose opinion you respect the most on these matters dies by suicide. Read more

Not Comics- What’s in that Red Shoe, Anyway?

As we often do, Rebecca and I watched another movie we used to like and determined that, well, Tom Hanks is probably happy that people have mostly forgotten his early comedies.

You know what I wish I hadn’t just stumbled across?

Peanuts fan fiction. Jesus fucking Christ, people. Jesus fucking Christ.

I mean, seriously. Kill this shit with fire.

Wow. If you need me, I’ll be in the corner with a bottle of bourbon and a Bowie knife.

Well, I’ll be god-damned.

Jim Davis is allowing a Garfield Without Garfield book to be published, and has a sense of humor about the existence of the strip (I suppose it helps that the book will also provide him with assloads of money).  Good for him, I guess.

Nowhere #32- jon’s 4th of july weekend (plus bonus materials)

So, this week Jon learns a harsh lesson that’s surprisingly common, I’m told. I’ve never actually played Guitar Hero or Rock Band (I’d like to, it just never works out), but I’ve had enough guitar-playing friends complain about getting waxed by children that it seems to be a universal right of passage.

Couple of other items:  my old band Red Hay, which provided a bunch of source material for Nowhere Band, got a nice writeup on Tried to Rock, a wonderfully kick-ass site about bands that don’t go anywhere (you can see why the site appeals to me). Go over and check the whole site out, it’s good, good stuff.

And, hopping away from comics and music, Rebecca and I have once again sat down and tried to decide whether another beloved movie stands the test of time. The latest contender? Say Anything.

Republican Hats

w00t! A strip of mine got picked for the City Pages (Minneapolis’s alt-weekly) Comics Issue, focusing on the upcoming Republican National Convention. I did some writing for them back in my freelance days, but this is the first time I’ve convinced them– or anybody– to actually pay me for a comic. I’m pretty jazzed– hey, validation!

Also, the next Nowhere strip should be up in the next day or two, and a couple of other bloggy posts are forthcoming. Horn o’ plenty, dude.

Not Comics- Does Reservoir Dogs Hold Up?

Rebecca and I discuss this in great detail, and you’ll have to go over there to get the answer.

Back at the Table!

So, I’m back, and work on Nowhere #28 is proceeding pretty well; it’s about half pencilled, although the half that remains is the tough half.  Oh, well.  Things are looking good for it to be up by Monday, June 9.  6/9, dude!

In the meantime, while you’re waiting, here’s an oldie-but-goodie for you: my comic about a guy who sets out to shoot Fleetwood Mac in the head. There are some things I’d do differently if I was making that one now, but I still like ‘er a lot…

Not comics- Rebecca and I talk movies some more!

We’re about to leave for vacation, but we still found time to talk about Dead Poets Society; my side of the conversation somehow managed to include Led Zeppelin and Wolverine.

Another Illustration: Tuxedo Ted

TuxedoTed

Once again, an illustration for a blog post of Rebecca’s; this is an awesome, awesome (or creepy, creepy, depending on your POV) at Mancini’s in St. Paul.

While I’m here, I might as well mention that Nowhere  27 (featuring Dan, who’s been absent for a while) is in the Photoshop stage now, and could be up tomorrow if things break right. Otherwise, Friday for sure.
